The Berkel & Company Contractors is fast approaching 50 years of service to our customers. We have learned that it takes more than equipment and manpower to successfully complete a project. It takes vision and innovation.
A new State-Of-The-Art
Berkel & Company designed and built drill rig, the Berkel 1227
, was
placed into service in January 2005 in South Florida.
The new rig has a torque capacity of 90,000-ft-lbs and 55 R.P.M. top speed. The 110 foot rig was able to drill a 24 inch diameter pile in varying quality of rocks to a depth of 94 feet in a much shorter drilling time than previous rigs.
The lead design provides more stability with less than one degree of lead flex under full load.
The new Berkel & Company rig utilitzes latest hydraulic technology, including a newly designed load sensing hydraulic power unit that allows maximum power to be transferred to the bit automatically without excessive jolting. This provides better productivity and less bit and teeth wear.
Almost daily, Berkel & Company accepts challenges from one of our existing customers or by a potential new customer to come up with a solution to a unique opportunity. It may be to design a new piece of equipment or the creative use of existing equipment.
Sometimes power is not the only consideration for the successful completion of a project. Accessability
can be equally important.
At the Smithsonian
a mono pod crane raises a Berkel LHR rig over
into a courtyard
.
The reduced weight of the LHR rig made this possible.

Recently, Berkel & Company installed rock anchors to secure the existing foundation of the parking garage at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.
This was done as the adjacent lot was being excavated for construction of a new Energy Center for the hospital. The Project Focus of this web site tells the full story.
